This year’s PlastiCon 2025 at the UP Marine Science Institute was a celebration and a convergence of science and art through a special art exhibition titled “Collision”.
Brought to life by some of the country’s most talented artists from The Artist Backroom and Galerie Jose, Collision honored the beauty of the Philippine seas while confronting the uncomfortable truths of plastic pollution.
Special guests included Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and UP MSI Director Dr. Laura David, who both showed strong support for the union of research, art, and civic action. Their presence reminded us that preserving our oceans is a collective social mission of all people in varying industries and sector.
Curated by Lara Latosa, the show featured limited edition artworks that brought marine life and its fragility to the surface, figuratively and emotionally. But perhaps one of the most memorable parts of the opening was the interactive installation by Lara herself entitled “What Really Matters”. Convention attendees were invited to legally “vandalize” her artwork as a symbolic gesture to mimic sense of discomfort.
The act was uncomfortable, raw, and unforgettable. And that was the point.
Art is meant to move, and Collision did just that.
Proceeds from the show support the UP MSI Foundation, helping fund vital marine research and conservation efforts across the country.
This exhibit is both a show and a statement. And it's only the beginning.
🌊 Thank you to all who came, created, and cared. We can’t wait to show you what’s next.
